Isabelle Turns 5!

All of these are from Izzy's birthday--Nov 15th

Picked up early from school, SURPRISE! She gets her first present on the way to Olive Garden!

Enjoying going out to eat, Sarah and Katy, both smiling and AT THE SAME TIME and WITH THEIR ARMS AROUND EACH OTHER IN LOVE! I'd say save this one for posterity.

Yup, you can buy the whole black tie mousse cake from Olive Garden. With our four kids, it's cheaper to get the whole thing. (36 bucks versus 6 per piece--and there are twelve slices!)

Sarah and Kay had a friend over. They played dressup/modeling and took their own shots. It was quite entertaining. Except that if you click on the picture you will see that she looks 15. Yikes.

Duck Stamp Contest

Every year there is a Federal Duck Stamp Contest. While Shawn and I were in Sanibel, we went the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge and they had a display of all the kids work. It was incredible what they could do.

Storybook Character Parade

Each girl had to dress like their favorite storybook character for school

KK was Kit Kittredge, An American Girl

Sarah was Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatchers, a book about how Peter Pan got to be Peter Pan.

And Izzy was Pinkalicious, a girl who loves, what else, PINK!

And We're Back!

Sorry bout that delay. We've now got internet!

Sarah and Momma each caught a nice speckled sea trout one cold and windy day in early December. Really, it WAS windy, thus, the hair.

By The Way...

If you have tried and failed to access my Cracker Rose Cottage link, (brother Andrew and fiancee Ally's blog), you might give it a try now. I reckon I just might have the proper link on there now. You're welcome.

Also, we celebrated my birthday on October 25. The big 35. On the downhill slide to 40. Lawdy, lawdy. We wanted to take the kids somewhere fun, but cheap. What did we do? We went fishing, of course. Caught 5 too-small redfish, 8 zillion catfish, 6 decent whiting, 2 silver trout, and a beer, in a tree. (Just kidding about the beer part, of course. You'd have to be a Gill (or have a brother named Andrew who makes you listen to weird songs, thanks bro) to get the "beer, in a tree" part. Sorry, not everyone can be a Gill. The next day, guess who got to clean those fish? Oh, don't worry, my birthday was OVER I was informed. Yup, cleaned those puppies right on my granite countertops, fried them in vegetable oil, made homemade tartar sauce, and we ate every last piece. In fact, we were crying for more. Alas, there was none. We kept the occasion small, but De Grande (aka Laura) made a chocolate cake with two-inch thick icing, ok, at least one inch thick, I mean, it made my children (and myself) weep for joy. My present, and I use the singular form intentionally, was a king-size mattress that I picked out myself. And it is grand, and worth every bit of present-taking-up-ability for all of my 35 years. Love gettin' old, eh?

Our next venture will be, gasp, CHILD-FREE! Shawn and I are taking a well-deserved 10-year anniversary trip to some place. That's how it is with kids. We're just going SOME place. We don't even know yet. We've tossed around a lot of ideas but nothing has screamed GO THERE! Our official anniversary is Nov 14th, but Izzy's birthday is Nov 15th so we will have to come home on the actual anniversary. (Can you believe she will be FIVE!?) Anyway, if you have any suggestions, in Florida or within decent driving time, please let me know! We don't know if we can leave Willie for three or four days, (I dissolve into nothing without him you know) but we will try. Laura gets the grand and most entertaining job of 24-hour childcare while we're gone. Get em to school, dance, homework, reading night, etc etc. She's going to have a lovely time. And I'll be sure to bring her the shampoos from our place of stay as a nice "thank you" gift. I haven't been on a vacation without kids since our honeymoon to London and Paris. And we managed to come back with a Sarah Downing Stephenson. Hmmm, Shawn may not want to go when I remind him of that! Let's keep it to ourselves, shall we?
Sorry for the delay in blogging. My computer is doing weird things, physical memory dumps, freezing for hours on end, saying there is no internet when there is, etc. I happened to turn it on today to see if I could at least download my pictures onto an external hard drive and VOILA, the D&#* things works! So, here is a post of some Halloween pictures. I will try to get this thing working, but in the meantime, if you have anything to say to me, you better call me on the phone. Lord knows I had 118 e-mails to sort through and I was afraid to do too much with anything! Blogging is definitely priority! This might be my worst blogging month yet! Anyway, enjoy it while you can.

TRICK OR TREAT!

We had a great Halloween. Laura and Leify joined us and a bunch of our friends on a hay-filled trailer going around town for a variety of treats. Besides the usual candy, we got french fries, sodas, chicken nuggets, pencils, even toothpaste! It was a bit long for the little ones (and the backs of us grown-ups, hay isn't as comfortable as you might think!), but we had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect, our children were rotting their teeth out, what more could you ask for? Hmmm, a 49-10 Gators over Georgia game? DONE! Go Gators!

Sarah finally got to go trick-or-treating as a cockroach. She wanted to last year, but I wouldn't buy the costume because it was 60 bucks. After Halloween, I got it on clearance and waited for this year. Here she is in all her buggy splendor.

Her antennas were in the way a bit on the hayride, but she had a great time with everyone saying, "Are you a cockroach?!"

Butterflies and Grecian Princesses

Isabelle was adorable in her Monarch butterfly costume. Thanks, Tom Arma! (He makes rockin' toddler costumes, I've got my eye on the rhino one for Willie next year!) The only negative on this costume was that Momma could wear the hood, so Izzy kept having it slip off all night. I should've brought safety pins...

Here she is with her pumpkin sack, ready to go eat some SUGAR!

My Katy was a Grecian princess. We borrowed the costume--thanks, Kira! She used the golden bag my make-up came in as a treat bag. I thought that was very creative of her. She felt great all made-up and sparkly.

The color of that dress really made her eyes WOW blue!

Frogs and Cowboys

Willie stole some hearts with his rainforest frog suit. Thanks, Tom Arma!

Sweet Leif was so handsome in his cowboy outfit. The boots doubled as a candy bag when he got tired of walking and Laura had to carry him!

Adorable cousins, only four months apart if you can believe it!

21 months old and haaaaaand-SOME!

We Must Be Crazy...Or Close To It!

So two weeks has slipped by since my last post, and I don't know exactly where it has gone. Strange things are occuring at a rather rapid rate, and I am multi-tasking as fast as I can. To start with, Katy was home four days last week with a 103.5 degree fever. I stood-up my mother-in-law for the girls first official piano lesson in Yankeetown. I thought it was Tuesday. Really! I was floored when she called and said are you coming? I was like, yup, we'll be there tomorrow! She said, it's today. Whoops. Finally, Katy made it back to school for Friday. You try making up four days worth of schoolwork. It's not easy.

Then, to throw me for another giant loop, my sister Laura, her husband Jason, and little Leify-pants are moving to Cedar Key! Wow. Jason is interested in becoming a clammer, I tried to warn him that the romance wears off very quickly! He is undeterred, however, and I am hunting down a rental house, a PO box, and jobs in no short order. They will arrive with moving van on October 16--yes, 1 week from tomorrow! I'm super-excited, it's been years since I got to spend any time with her at all. We are so thrilled to take Leify trick-or-treating downtown! It will be a blast.

Next, Shawn and I, Jonny and Jenny, are going into business together. We've both been clamming steadily, planting ever-larger crops, and working with local wholesalers. We've decided that in order to make our business grow, we must expand our ability to sell what we have planted. In short, we have bought a large local clam wholesale shop called Southern Cross. It is super-pricey, but completely turn-key which is a huge plus. Jonny and Shawn will remain independent clammers for the time-being, on our way to deciding if we want a true partnership. My job, yes, a going-back-to-work part-time job, is to expand sales and assist in running the office. The office manager will stay on, as I do not intend to work 60 hours a week like he does. There is plenty of room to keep Willie there with me, a play room, and a nap room, which I will do occasionally. I also am hoping Laura will be able to assist me with him and my girls on a semi-regular basis. It's a big big BIG leap of faith, especially in these tough economic times, but we intend to work hard as always, treat people the way we would like to be treated, and hope that we continue to be blessed like we have always been.

Part of the business arrangement yielded us selling three of our 6 rental houses to the SC owner. Jonny also is selling his rental house to him as well. This allowed us to lower our liability, lessen our work load, and most importantly, lower the mortgage payment. I will still manage the rentals for him as he lives across the state. In any event, the owner Bill, was quite accomodating as to the financing of the place. If he hadn't been, we certainly would never have gotten past the first discussion. We are looking forward to a new challenge, not so looking forward to dealing with people and their nonsense, and hoping for a bright future. Every one we've talked to about it says that if Jonny and Shawn are running it, it will be just fine. Their work ethic is well-known. Now just wait till we tell everyone we can't buy their clams because we're selling our own! It'll happen, at least till we get going. All those difficulties are the hardest part of the whole thing.

I'm off, gotta go pick up the girls and then drive to Yankeetown for our lesson. At least I know it's Wednesday this week. That's a lot farther ahead than I was last week! By the way, if you're interested, check out the Southern Cross link I've added to my blog. It'll give an overview of the business and the things we will be doing. Enjoy, and if you have any advice, let me know. And if you're advice is don't do it, YOU'RE TOO LATE! but thanks, anyway! : )

Willie and His Books

Willie loves his books. I went to go pick out a couple for Sean Patrick who is visiting Nanny for a few weeks, and here's what I saw!

He was taking books out of the basket and making two beautiful stacks. By the time I got the camera, he had stacked the second stack too high and it fell over. He spent about forty-five minutes stacking and restacking the books.

This is for you, Scotty: Awww, look at Mr. Sweetness! He's so handsome! Look at his cute lil haircut I gave him! Did I mention he is soooooo handsome?

Grandpa Celebrates His Birthday

On Sept 27th, we invited Shawn's parents, also known as Grandma and Grandpa, to come to our house for a birthday dinner. Grandpa turned 69 years old on the 21st. We had a simple fish dinner with roasted red potatoes, spinach, and carrot and raisin salad. Grandma even gave the two older girls their first piano lesson! Isabelle was not only interested, she did quite well with the counting beats game. During the lesson, Shawn walked with his dad down at the new pier. We hadn't gotten together in a while so we did a lot of catching up. The kids all loved seeing Grandma and Grandpa again.

Grandpa is more than a little happy about his "Apple Snack Cake" from Cook's Illustrated. It was delicious with cinnamon, allspice, ginger, chunks of apple, and raisins. A great fall recipe if you get the chance to try it. Notice Katy's eyes are trained on dessert. She had three helping of ice cream. (They were small, it's all about how many helping you get with her!)

It's tough blowing out that one candle that represents 69 years!

This is a weird picture because I had the flash turned off accidentally, but when I lightened it, it was so cute even with all the graininess that I had to put it in. Willie wouldn't touch the ice cream (I personally think he thought it was mashed potatoes) until we dabbed it on his lips. He adored the cake too. I might have to keep that in mind come January 22!

Izzy shows off her preschool scrapbook (it's amazing what you can do when there is no one home and Willie is sleeping!) to Gma and Gpa. Willie looks on, hoping to check it out. In the background, you can see Florida doing a great job of LOSING to Ole Miss. My husband was going, Oh ho ho, how do you like that, DEAR? Every time something bad happened to Florida. He's obnoxious to watch football with. I tried to tell him that he was just jealous because I can no longer remember the last year they were RANKED. Not too mention the fact that who was FSU playing, um um um...

William Takes A Boat Ride

It was a beautiful day, Friday, September 19. Shawn had to take some replants out on the boat (clams that were too small to sell) and put them back in the water. I decided it would be a good day for Willie and me to go along. The temperature was perfect, nicely breezy, and water not too cold. Pretty soon it will be time for wetsuits, but not on this day, skinny dipping was just fine by William. We brought his kiddie pool that he likes to play in, but even that wasn't good enough. He kept pointing at the water, and saying his word for everything, "Enh?" No, you can't jump overboard yet, dearie. Finally, it was time.

Found a rogue clam that escaped the bag. Naked baby bottoms are the best.

Willie checks out the clam. He loves being in the water with Daddy. Momma was on a keen lookout (as always) for sharks. Her paranoia sets in frequently, especially when her baby is in the water. Maybe I'll get over it someday. Yeah, right.

My view through the power roller supports. Willie's off in the Gulf of Mexico.

Getting a little too far away for my likings. Not far enough for Willie's liking. Look at that sky, though, I told you it was a beautiful day!
